Signs pointing at the compressor
These symptoms often involve the compressor, but each one has other possible causes worth ruling out first.
Outdoor unit hums but the fan or compressor does not start
Classic hard start symptom. Frequently a failed run capacitor or contactor rather than the compressor itself, which is why testing matters before quoting a major repair.
The breaker trips whenever cooling is called
An electrically shorted or grounded compressor will trip a breaker, but so will a damaged contactor, chafed wiring or a failing fan motor. Repeated resets are not safe.
Warm air indoors while the outdoor fan spins
The fan running with no cooling can mean the compressor is not pumping - or that the charge is low, the coil is packed with dust or a reversing valve on a heat pump is stuck.
Loud grinding, screeching or rattling from the condenser
Internal mechanical noise can indicate compressor damage. It can also be a loose fan blade, worn motor bearings or debris in the cabinet.
Short run cycles ending in a shutdown
A compressor overloading and tripping on its internal thermal protector will run briefly, stop and restart. High head pressure from a dirty coil produces the same pattern.
Repeated refrigerant recharges
Running a system low on charge for a long period is one of the most common ways compressors are damaged in this valley. If it has been topped off more than once, the leak needs to be found.
How we diagnose a suspected compressor failure
Compressor replacement is expensive enough that it should never be recommended from symptoms alone. This is what we verify first.
- Incoming voltage, breaker condition and disconnect integrity
- Contactor contacts and control voltage at the compressor
- Run and start capacitor values measured against the rated microfarads
- Compressor winding resistance and check for a winding shorted to ground
- Locked rotor and running amp draw compared to the data plate values
- Suction and discharge pressures, superheat and subcooling
- Condenser coil cleanliness and outdoor fan motor operation
- Indoor airflow, filter and evaporator coil condition
- Refrigerant type from the data plate and evidence of past leaks or repairs
- System age, remaining parts or compressor warranty coverage where applicable
Repair, compressor replacement, or a new system
A good share of suspected compressor calls turn out to be a capacitor, contactor or wiring repair. When that is what we find, we say so and fix it - a working compressor should not be replaced.
When the compressor really has failed, there are usually three honest paths: replace the compressor, replace the outdoor unit, or replace the full system. Which one makes sense depends on the age of the equipment, the refrigerant it uses, whether the indoor coil is matched, and whether any manufacturer warranty is still in force.
We do not quote a flat compressor price sight unseen, because the correct number depends on the model, refrigerant, labor involved and warranty status. We also cannot promise every compressor is repairable - some are not, and we will tell you plainly when that is the case so you are not paying to chase a dead system.

The unit strains to start and sometimes dims the lights. We measure the capacitor and start current instead of assuming the worst.

We isolate whether the fault is in the compressor windings, the contactor or the wiring before recommending anything.

A compressor losing efficiency, a dirty condenser coil or a slow leak all look the same from inside the house. Measurements tell them apart.

Compressors here run far more annual hours than in most of the country, often under high head pressure on 108 degree afternoons. Fine desert dust coats condenser coils and acts like insulation, forcing the compressor to work harder against higher discharge temperatures.
Low refrigerant charge from an unrepaired leak, a weak run capacitor left in service and restricted indoor airflow are the three conditions we most often find behind a burned out compressor. All three are preventable with a real diagnosis at the first symptom.
