Signs of a struggling R-22 system

These are the patterns we see most often on older equipment. Any of them is worth a diagnosis before the system stops entirely.

Warm or barely cool air at the vents

The blower runs but supply air is close to room temperature. That can be charge related, but it can just as easily be a capacitor, contactor, fan motor or compressor issue.

Ice on the line set or indoor coil

Icing usually points at low charge or restricted airflow. Shutting the system off and running the fan will thaw it, but the underlying cause still has to be found.

Very long run times and rising power bills

A system losing capacity runs longer to hold the same temperature. On older equipment this often shows up on the utility bill before it shows up as a breakdown.

Hissing sounds or oily residue at the coil or fittings

Refrigerant oil travels with the refrigerant, so an oily film or a hiss near a joint, coil or service valve is common leak evidence.

A history of repeated recharges

Refrigerant is not consumed in normal operation. If the system has been topped off more than once, there is a leak that was never located and repaired.

Equipment from roughly 2010 or earlier

Age alone does not mean replacement. It does mean parts sourcing, coil condition and refrigerant availability all belong in the conversation.

What we evaluate on an R-22 diagnosis

The goal is to identify the real failure and give you accurate information, not to sell a refill.

  • Equipment data plate to confirm the actual refrigerant type and system specifications
  • Electrical components under load: capacitors, contactor, wiring and motor amp draw
  • Airflow path including filter, blower and indoor coil condition
  • Outdoor condenser coil cleanliness and fan operation
  • Operating pressures, superheat, subcooling and temperature split across the coil
  • Leak evidence at coils, fittings, service valves and the line set
  • Compressor condition and starting behavior
  • An estimated repair path with the parts and refrigerant the job would actually require
  • A replacement comparison only when the repair economics warrant one

Repair versus replace on an R-22 system

Many R-22 failures are ordinary component failures. A capacitor, contactor, fan motor, control board or drain problem on a system that still holds its charge and cools well is usually worth repairing, and we will say so.

The math changes when there is a significant leak in the evaporator coil or line set, when the compressor has failed, or when the repair requires a large refrigerant charge on equipment that is already near the end of its service life. In those cases the repair cost can approach the cost of new equipment that will use less power.
