Signs your air conditioner needs repair
Most cooling failures give you warning before they turn into a full shutdown. If you notice any of these, it is worth a service call before the next heat wave.
Air coming out warm or barely cool
The blower runs but the supply air is close to room temperature. Usually a refrigerant charge problem, a failed compressor or capacitor, or an outdoor unit that is not running at all.
The system runs constantly and never satisfies the thermostat
On a 108 degree afternoon some runtime is normal, but a system that never shuts off is losing capacity. Dirty coils, low charge and undersized or leaky ducts are the usual causes.
Short cycling
The unit starts, runs a few minutes, then shuts down and repeats. Common causes are a failing capacitor, a tripping safety switch, a restricted filter or an oversized system.
Water around the air handler or a ceiling stain
A plugged condensate drain backs water into the pan. In Las Vegas the drain line collects dust and algae, and a clogged line can shut the system down or damage drywall.
New noises or smells
Hard starting, grinding, rattling panels, a burning smell or a musty odor from the vents all point at something specific. None of them should be ignored.
Breakers tripping
A system that trips the breaker has an electrical fault, a locked compressor or a motor drawing too much current. Resetting it repeatedly is how small problems become expensive ones.

Repair it or start planning a replacement
Most cooling problems are a repair. Capacitors, contactors, fan motors, control boards, drain issues and thermostat faults are all straightforward fixes on a system that is otherwise sound.
The conversation changes when the compressor has failed, when there is a large refrigerant leak in the coil or line set, or when the system is old enough that parts are getting hard to source. At that point the cost of the repair starts competing with the cost of a new system that will use less power and cool better.

Older systems get a real diagnosis first
Before anyone recommends major work, our technicians confirm the make, model, approximate age and the refrigerant type listed on the data plate. That information changes what parts are available and what a sensible repair looks like.
